Policyholder Advice

We’ve put together some guidance to help you to minimise the damage suffered by your home.

ESCAPE OF WATER FROM FIXED INTERNAL INSTALLATIONS – ‘CLEAN’ WATER

DO:

  • Turn off the water supply and try to prevent further damage.
  • Extract as much standing water as possible. Use a wet/dry vacuum if possible.
  • If it is dry outside, open windows and ventilate room(s) as much as possible.
  • Be aware and careful of slippery surfaces.
  • If you have a fan or other air movement source, blow cold air through the room (unless mould/mildew is evident, in which case no method of air circulation should be used). Ensure windows are open before using a fan.
  • Caution: do not use an electric fan or any other electrical equipment on a wet floor.

DO NOT:

  • Lift or remove carpets or soft furnishings etc.
  • Apply heat to the carpet in an attempt to dry(this can cause shrinkage and possible structural damage).
  • Use any cleaning solutions including bleach, detergents or disinfectants.
  • Turn on or use any electrical items that may have been affected by water or condensation.
  • Enter a room where standing water is evident if electrical sockets are submerged.

WATER DAMAGE CAUSED BY FLOODING FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE – ‘BLACK’ WATER

DO:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Close doors and isolate affected areas where possible.
  • Be aware and careful of slippery surfaces.
  • Keep the temperature low and the affected room(s) ventilated by opening doors/windows to the outside where possible.

DO NOT:

  • Attempt to remove any affected items. Possible health risks may be present as a result of contaminants in the water.
  • Attempt to clean.
  • Turn on or use any electrical items that have been affected by water or condensation

FIRE/SMOKE DAMAGE

DO:

  • Open doors and windows to the outside where possible to help remove smoke odours and particulants.
  • Keep the temperature low (e.g. keep the heating turned off).

DO NOT:

• Turn on or use any electrical items which may have been affected by direct fire damage, smoke or soot.
• Attempt to clean items contaminated by smoke or soot.
• Use fans to ventilate.

ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE AND STAIN REMOVAL

DO:

  • Scrape up as much of the spilt product as possible with a spoon or palette knife (i.e. blunt edge) always working towards the centre of the spillage.
  • Keep the stain damp by using a little plain warm water and a damp cloth.
  • Cover ANY paint spillage with cling film or polythene to help prevent drying

DO NOT:

  • Lift the carpets or roll them up.
  • Rub the stain.
  • Use solvents, detergents, bleaches, disinfectants in attempting to clean affected areas or items.
